Warned by stealthy footsteps in an adjoining room, Mrs. California Newton, who stands high in the councils of the California club and is prominent in society, outwitted and trapped Martin Chizolisch, a burglar and desperado, in her home at 2008 Vallejo street late Wednesday night. With the aid of a neighbor, whom she summoned, and her Japanese cook, Mrs. Newton barricaded the door leading from the room in which the burglar was at work. Then she telephone for the police and the burglar was captured.

Mrs. Newton had been reading. She heard the burglar moving about and tiptoed out of the house. Once on the street dignity scattered to the four points of the compass as she hastened around the corner to the home of Lester Newell at 2019 Laguna street. Newell responded to the emergency call and accompanied Mrs. Newton back to her home.

Then, with the brave clubwoman directing the maneuvers, Mrs. Newton's home was entered through a back door. The Japanese cook, apprised by instinct that the enemy was Russian, joined the line or march.

Quietly the one door leading from the room in which the thief was at work was barricaded. Overanxious to fight for the honor of Nippon and Mrs. California Newton, the cook made a slight noise just as the barricade was completed. Then all held their breaths, including the burglar, as apparently he was too frightened to escape through the window.

Meanwhile Mrs. Newton called up the North end police station. "There's a burglar in the house and we've got him trapped," she said. "Send policemen down here to get him."

Three sturdy minions of the law, led by Corporal C. J. Mitchell, answered the call. Chizolisch was subdued and handcuffed. Then back to the North end station through the night marched the four with their prisoner. The burglar was booked and gave his name as Martin Chizolisch, age 24. Thus ended the charge of the "night" brigade.
